dont ecus play up any more....?

it could be a loose connection or earth.......the fact that it takes hours to play up once its running
sort of makes me think the problem is heat related but not too close to the engine........or the problem would occur sooner.......

connect a fuel pressure guage up to it and see what is happening when with regards to the fuel side of things.......

and also dont discount a faulty alternator.......these can cause all sorts of problems if they deliver rough voltage......
it confuses the ecu and it can do all sorts of strange things......
but they go undiagnosed because the battery is charging.......

the first check i would do is fuel pressure......connect the guage and see if there is pressure when struggling to start.......
and then again when it plays up.......if resetting the ecu helps.....its gotta be electrical......

but that may only be the stalling after a few hours......
the hard starting may be a different problem.........

I thought (and im not up to date on freeloader) that the L series diesel was mechanical with the ECU only controling the no boost fuel limiter and shut down.... or have i got that ass about?

If the tapping is similar to morse code it may be a message - that someone (probably a mechanic) is stuck in the engine bay..........

Funny buggers up there at Alstonville, must be the lack of pollution in the air, hey Quiggers ?
Next time you in Lismore, drop into Jim Gamble locksmiths and tell my brother to sell the cruiser and buy a landy !

Seriously, it looks like all the easy options have been tried so I'm probably going to have to bite the bullet and rebuild the pump ($800 at Gemini Diesel).

    Thank for everyones suggestions.

Def130: Shall do, I really should get another key for the other car.

Sadly, we have a real air pollution problem up here.

It comes from those who drive (NOT LAND ROVER) diesel 4wds (usually jacked up to bigfoot height) and have no idea about changing air filters or even an occasional service, cough cough, idiots............

Missus just picked up the injector pump from Gemini Diesel. The primary shaft has a gouge in it and was letting air it and the bearings were "about to shatter". $1,164 all up.

Total cost of the vehicle is now up to $3390, still cheap.

Funny thing is that all the problems have occured after a load or two of bio-diesel from somewhere in Bathurst. Not sure about the rest of you but I'll take a lot of convincing to ever use bio-diesel in the future.

    FIXED !

Finally reassembled the engine bay and started the motor. Starts immediately and runs perfectly with no smoke at all.

Thanks for everyones suggestion, can fully recommend Gemini Diesel at Carlton.
