    BMC marine diesel engines 2.25

    Diesel engines 2.25, what is the difference between the engine when it's in Land rover form and Boat form. Is there any reason one could not use a used boat engine in a Land rover?

    I'm not familiar with the marine conversion, but it will be basically the same engine, probably with different accessories to some extent, and probably with different injection pump settings, I expect set to a lower maximum rpm as boat engines tend to spend a lot of time at full throttle. The exhaust manifold is probably water cooled, and it may have a different water pump.
    There should be no reason why you couldn't use it with normal accessories fitted and appropriate adjustments.

    I have never know a land rover being used as a marine engine. But the VM Diesel in the Range Rover in the late eightys was an Itian Marine Diesel engine , but had huge problems with the head gasket going. And that was blamed on the fact that because it was a marine engine it did not get as much cooling as it did in a boat

    Hi
    I am not familiar with a marine version of the 2.25 – however my experience with automotive to marine diesel conversions has taught me this;
    Ignoring engine mounts - for marine use there would be things like - a different alternator, Starter motor (spark suppression). Exhaust manifold should be a water cooled unit, the fuel system could be tuned differently (maybe even different injection pump), fuel stop solenoid will be different.

    If this is a 2nd hand marine engine I would want to check if it was closed or open cooling (open = seawater; closed would have a heat exchanger with coolant in the engine). If the engine was open cooled be very wary of internal rusting.

    Usually going from a car to a boat requires quite a few changes due to the installation in an enclosed box, but going back to a car – all should be ok - except if it has a proper marine stop solenoid on the fuel pump, that would have to be changed to work with the car circuits. Only other issue I can see, might be water cooled exhaust manifold, it might not last with the normal heat you would get with out the water.
