Ray - they are normally connected through the door light switches, on the front pillar near the hindges, but some have a seperate switch in the same location (ie two switches)
They are normally held onto the pillar with one self tapping screw, and they get a bit dirty and the earth connection ends up being bad.
Unscrew the switch, it will just pop out of the pillar, clean it and the metal behind the switch, get a new self tapper and screw it back in.
Try that first.
Also check that the wire is still attached to the end of the switch

Ray, it is more than likely the door ajar switch.
Have a look at http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/index.php and search on door ajar (make sure you search on all terms) in the P38A forum
The switch is in the door latch. Possibly very corroded. See this thread for pic http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php't=3870
