    300 Tdi, Block cracks?

    OK, this is something I haven't seen before. A 300Tdi in a disco with a minor head gasket leak(Gasses in coolant) after an overheat due I think to a completely mud blocked radiator core/ A/C condenser.
    Anyway, the unusual symptom is oil in the water, and water in the oil. This is very rare with these engines, as apart from a head or block crack, there is only 1 place it can get in and that is in the oil cooler in the radiator. BUT, as those with Td5's know, the oil cooler leak can be pretty full on, with lots of oil and high pressures in the cooling system etc, none of which this had.
    AND, to make it more confusing, the head gasket was very slightly blown around number 4 fire ring into the water port, and all the head bolts were loose/ stretched due to heat, but there was no evidence of oil/water interface in the head gasket area at all. The head was tested for 7 to 8 hours and lost no pressure at all. Anywhere. The only option left is to suspect the block for a crack somewhere between the water and oil galleries, around the cam and lifter galleries.
    My question is has anyone seen or heard of this ? or can anyone suggest any other scenarios? We have come to a holt on account of the owner not obviously wanting to replace the engine block....

    I think that the Cracked Block Syndrome is one common in the UK , caused by the water in the block freezing in winter, when insuffient anti- freeze is in the coolant, has this vehicle ever been in the high county down there during winter, or has the owner recently bought it, if so, it could be a case of flog it off before the "Chemi-Weld" wears off sayeth the previous owner

    if the block is cracked......try what uncleho says.....
    try some chemiweld......it should at least keep the thing running till the owner can make a decision......
    it may also fix the problem permanently.......


    if it doesnt do anything at all.....the engine is stuffed anyway....so its gotta come out.......


    have you pressure tested the cooling system......?

    I didn't suggest that justinc use Chemi-Weld, but thought if the current owner has recently bought the car, it may have been a trick used be the previous owner to unload a sick vehicle

    Well i don't know about the 300 Tdi but i have cracked a block in a 200 Tdi from over heating (and they are near enough the same blocks). After all over heating is the easyest way to crack a block

    What about blocking off the water gallery exits on the block and pressure testing that?

    VERY interesting, this vehicle came from Victoria and always had had a overheating problem on and off says the owner...Maybe the chemiweld eventually unwelded...
