Aren't they standard 12-point head to which a standard socket will fit?
Or do they use Torx?

Hi,
I have finally got the Defender 200tdi engine on a stand and I have stripped it back to the stage where all I have to do is remove remove the crank. Would anyone know the technical term for the head configuration on the bolts and nuts that retain the crank so I can buy the appropriate socket.
In additon to my previous thread regarding the crank, I was able to track down someone locally who will weld and re-machine the crank. If any one wants his details send me a PM.
Thanks
Lucas

If they are the same as the TD5 they are a star shape. You can use a normal socket on them.
Could you download a picture or do an accurate drawing of this "weird" looking [to you] bolt?.......or is it a screw???
......so people at least have an idea as to what it looks like?
Has it got a 12 or 6 point head?.....is the head "recessed", by any chance?
By what means do these bolts/screws "retain" the crank????? ......do you mean the 10 14mm main bearing cap bolts?????

same bolt as a 300Tdi, standard 12 point head. As Ron suggested, just use a 12 point socket.
And again, I'd be using another crank. They are only cast, not forged.
What has happened to the crankshaft that it needs to be welded? Metal spraying or hard chroming may be a better alternative.
