Usually alternator driven, but you have to get your pulley diameters correct to achieve a correct reading. But a tacho on a 4BD1 is not that essential as you have no problems hearing the engine

Has anyone fitted a tachometer to a 4BD1? I am reworking an instrument panel to have proper instruments with numbers not just white slashes. While I am about it I am going to add a few switches and relocate some of the factory fittings ( 110 County, 4BD1 and 5 speed). Also going to add an instrument pod with oil temp. gauges for the engine, trans, and transfer. Thought I might put a tacho in the pod as well.
Anyone done this? How, where to buy, where driven from? Have a couple of ideas but thought I might ask and see.

A mate in the Brisbane LR club has one (Kevin) - also driven off the alternator. I can give you his contact details if you want to go and check out his setup. His county looks better than when it left the factory.

problem solved. Zenith Engineering, Isuzu industrial engine dealer, has tachos and senders on the shelf. Sender screws into a plug on the injection pump. Tacho-$196, sender $126. VDO prices were $364, $196. Brisbane Isuzu, the truck dealer had the sender similar price, but no tachos. Their trucks had the tacho in the instrument cluster. They suggested buying the sender and getting the tacho or instrument cluster from an 1985-93 N series from a wrecker or used parts importer. Would then have to fabricate a housing. This is the way I might go as I am to make an instrument pod for the top of the dashboard for extra temp. gauges.

That is where the truck people told me the sensor goes, but the service dept at Zenith said it goes under the injection pump in one of four plugged holes under the pump pistons. Perhaps they are different items. I have not yet been over to Zenith to buy one.

Mate I picked up a tacho VDO cockpit for my isuzu defender for around 170 from memory, with gauges it payes big time to ring around. Try "new england instuments", you'll have to google them as I don't have their details any longer. I saved over 300 big ones by getting my gauges through them.
As for hooking it up, I just ran mine off the alternator. Some have a "W" terminal on the rear that you can just plug straight into. Other wise you'll have to do what I did and pull the alternator down to fit an auxilary wire into it to run the tacho off, not a big job you just need to know a little auto electric's.
If you need help drop me I pm as I'm more than happy to lend a hand,
Cheers
You could try one of these. Reads a pulse off the injection line.
