If the trip meter is still working, then it is a problem with the interior gears of the odometer. As to fixing it - it might just be a cog stuck somewhere, or one of the plastic gears fractured and no longer transmitting drive to the odometer. I've had one (on a RRC) do this, and the solution was to cannabalise an older vehicle for the small plastic gear cog Taking the speedo unit apart is difficult - if you're not comfortable with working on watch sized parts, find another defender speedo. There are various instrument repairers around but it will cost more to fix the odometer than to buy a 2nd hand model. Having said that, remember that other vehicles made about the same time will have similar odometers. You may be able to get spares from a wreck of a Ford or Holden.
