Mechanical stuff i am fine with,
Rather than hijack someone elses thread, i'll create another one
i have read all the ABS probs everyone is having. Mine has been happening for years now. I have asked qustions in the past.
Only lately has there been a difference, ie the light goes out and the system is set.
My ABS light stays on sometimes, other times it goes out, sometimes when i put the brakes on and it feels like there is a coarse rat in the lines trying to get out, with a hard pedal and the abs light comes back on, and the brake pedal softens (thats the best description i can come up with)
Other times the light just comes on after 20 mins of driving(that seems to be the maximum time it stays off and set)
I had it put on the testbook when i had the timing belt done and it came up with airgap front sensors, they were 'adjusted ' then I drove out and light went off and 5 mins later came back on. i have checked the sensor connections, they are fine, pulled the sensors they are clean.checked the resitance things for the sensors( with a multimeter) and they are within tolerances 1000 or similar.
I have bled the brakes, front and rear, dirty fluid came out it should all be new now( that was 3 weeks ago) used about 700ml of brake fluid
Now not wanting to sound like a proper goose,
what does the shuttle valve do and from my a@@@e /about description is that the problem.
No I don't have a test book and the nearest respectable checker is over the border.
thanks in advance for the possible forthcoming, death threats, offers of money, questions about my intelligence and the good advice.

got me on that one John.
how's the tractor?
if a shuttle valve was fitted, columbia wouldn't have gone bang - helpful?
the fish are doing well![]()

the shuttle 'valve' sends a signal back to the ecu to let it know that the brakes are being used and both circuits are working

Stevo
i have read your thread from page to page to page, and still didn't understand it. Plus the recall notice and the wabco stuff, thats why i did this post. have done the alt cont del too.
yours is a D2 mine is a D1 , i guess there is a commonality in the problem, but everyone else seems to have that downhill traction control thingy with theirs, henceforth the usual 3 amigos light problem. which i haven't got, that made me think it could be something else.
Thats why i tried to describe what happens, I should add this, intermitent on and off for the lights only happened after the sensors were checked and was plugged into the testing thingy.that was in early december. Before that nothing made it go out, except the night I hit them hard to stop hitting the creature on the road.
going from your photos , and your description
i take it you got a new switch, that bottom bit in the first photo,
the other switch with no solder was that the replacement, or the origianl bit.
Now the difficult bit, by taking off the bits you described do you end up with the innards exposed, or just the edges. Like do you have to break seals and so on.
at the end of it all is it hard to bleed the system, and how do you know all the air is out of it.
I am not comfortable fiddlying with anything brake, between the master cyl and the wheel cylinders, unless I know what I am doing. At the moment it is all fine and works quite well, albeit no abs.
But i am not likely to go to a brake place to be told i have to get a new modulator that will probably be more that the car is worth.
yes graham
the red beast is going well, i have left the bonnet off it goes faster, well at least gives that illusion, just have to redo the rocker cover, it has a slight oil leak, don't you just love badly cut cork gaskets.
the other day, I noticed the brothers of the little fish you got are growing and some are changing colour. Will have to dip the net and get some more out.
john
I think it is raining on your side of the hill, so much for spraying lantana today.
not yet john, just very grey.....
the bigger fish are making new ones. hmmmmmm
the little fellas are starting to go orange , but one is getting black - the black sheep of the family?
they follow me around the house, pavlov's fish?
the mob would like some other varieties![]()

another fishing day?

yes mate the head of the household has given me another get rid of that ugly fish pond speech. So fishing is definately on the cards again.
doesn;t anyone other than stevo have any similar descriptions to my little problem.??
john
ps, i don't want to pull the thing out if I don;t have to! the modulator that is
sorry when you had mentioned shuttle valve I thought series II disco I am not sure on the series I disco what is the wabco number on the unit it should look something like this 478 407 926 2 also have you checked the wheel bearings for any movement this can give a faulty sensor reading as well
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

thanks stevo,
the no.s from top line are build date? 003 1996
next line 478 407 003 0 anr5263
now thats out of the way, last time i checked the wheel bearings there was negligible movement. but perhaps with all things landrover the simplest thing is usually the cause.
Will check again.
But as I said earlier and from all the internet research i have done, the common problem seems related to the 3 amigoes( as everyone seems to call them) lights, which I haven't got. and the D2 is the culprit,
Tried it again this morning going into town, which with my limited abs knowledge, seems to be my vehices common denominator
( i will say this it has only started happening since i had it put on the testbook in december, where it read air gap for front sensors) ,
it is this,
start the motor, its an auto, put foot on the brake pedal, and push hard, there is a bit of resistance at first then it goes down a bit,
drive off the system arms itself, ie light goes off, put foot on the brake straight after and the pedal is hard, then feels like the pump motor comes on( the rat in the line description), then pedal becomes soft and normal hard and soft braking is fine,
5-10 mins of driving along a winding road, is ok, then a stop sign and a right turn then the light comes back on.
Sensor movement from wheel bearing maybe??
from what you have said maybe the sensor, but it is the activity of the pump that has me stumped, thats why i am trying to understand how the shuttle valve works in normal abs and non abs on operation.
Maybe there is a bit of rubbish in the valve,
Maybe mine has a gremlin in it,
thanks
john
Hi john, your abs modulator does not have any shuttle valve or switch inside it,just eight solenoids here is the drawings for your model
http://www.wabco.info/intl/drw/5/507...d026d0416a47ea
now if yours is happening only? when you are turning right then it may be still a crook wire going into the sensor when I was doing the research for my problem there was a couple of posts about sensors checking out fine but when the wheel was turned the signal would change due to a broken wire inside, you could check this out by connecting your multimeter up to the sensor and grabbing the wire and moving it see if the reading changes.
there is a huge difference between the series II and I abs systems and ecu controls
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.
