D2 wheel specification
I'd like to change the wheels on my caravan to match the 16 inch wheels on my 2001 TD5 D2 so that I've got better flexibility and more spare wheels in an emergency. Currently my D2 is running 255/70/16 on the 8 inch LR alloy rims. Changing the caravan hubs to 5 x 165 to suit the LR wheel pattern is not a problem. However I've then got to find wheels to suit. Because of the space that's available in the caravan wheel arch I'd like to stick to 7 inch wheels and LT tyres but of course I'd also like them to look good as well, so I'd like to avoid the standard LR 7 inch steel rim.
Did LR ever produce an alloy 16X7 wheel and if so any ideas where I might find some for sale? I'm in WA by the way.
If not, does anyone know the offset on the LR 7 inch steel rim so that I can try and find some aftermarket 16x7 rims that will match. The 7 inch steel rim has the notation 16x7JH2x33 stamped into it. Does this mean that the offset is 33mm because it looks a lot more than that?

If by D2 you mean Disco2 you have the wrong wheel specifications.
The Disco2 came with 16x7" alloys and a few came with steels or steel spares. They also came out with 16x8 and 18x8 alloys. The Rangie P38a rims also are the same specifications. The rims are 5x120mm PCD not the typical LR wheel stud pattern, and they all have a 57mm offset (not backspace!) which moves the hub mating surface towards the outside by 57mm (moving the wheel further in).

Good catch, thanks. I'd taken the 5x165 from an aftermarket wheel manufacturers' fitment guide and checked it against a Discovery steel rim that I have. However the actual wheels on my series 2 discovery ARE at 120PCD as you said. Perhaps wheel manufacturer is refering to series 1 discovery? Obviously the steel rim is no good to me at all.
So given a wheel, how do you measure the backspace to check it's correct for the vehicle. Do you measure the distance of the hub mating surface from the inside edge and then subtract half of the wheel width or is there a smarter easier way.
Of course all I have to do now is find 5 off, 16x7 LR alloy rims from a series 2 disco and retro fit 120PCD hubs to the caravan. Look out for wanted ad in the forum.
Thanks again for putting me on right track.

Gday Russell, to measure the backspace if the rim had no tyre on it, you would lay it on the ground with the inner side of the rim down and measure from the ground up to the wheel mating surface. With a tyre on you'll need to improvise. You'll probably also find that a 7" rim will actually measure at about 8" wide when you include the flanges etc.
The offset is the difference between the mating surface and the centreline of the rim.In the Discovery2's case its then 57mm away from the centreline with the mating surface closer to the outside of the rim.
D2 rims sell on Ebay etc usually for around $150ea and you may find that a Commodore hub is also a 120PCD, but the studs are different so may need rover studs in it. Also D1 and D2 studs are different thread types.
