Good on you Brian! But worth noting that in some cases, particularly bearings, the general supplier such as BSC has items where the manufacturer only supplies complete units.

    WHY WHY WHY
Yeah a few years ago somone broke a mirror on a Pug i had . The company sent me to the local Pug garage where my mate worked in the parts department. He told me that they don't sell the glass seperate. Would have to buy the whole mirror (electric.) so i bought the whole mirror and fitted it. About 2 dys later my mate told me in the pub that they do sell the mirror seperate but don't tell everyone (even more so if they are companys paying ) as it makes his figures better so he can reach targets. He did say if i was paying he would have sold me a glass for a couple of quid, but as the company i was working for were paying he charged me 100 quid for a new complete mirror.
Since that day i have not trusted parts places that say that a part does not come seperate . And i have found that this is the same with Land Rover parts too. hey will tell you , you can get just the small part have to buy the lot, and then i gone somewhere else and found the part for sale on its own.

Or the other thing i have done it just take it of a scrapper

You are a good man Brian, parents who look after their kids AND drink beer deserve a pat on the back, or another beer......

Quick parts replacement story: Many years ago the Aussie comedy show Fast Forward did a skit on the 'replacement parts business'

A woman turned up at a dealer in a sedan - maybe a Pulsar, didn't matter - anyhow it was blue and had a broken tail light.

A bit later she went back to the shop to collect her car.

There it was and it was red.

The customer service bloke said to her: This is the replacement part. (an entire car!)

Well I thought it was funny....
