I'll let LandyAndy tell you about '99 Td5's--
These auto's are top class and very smart,
just make sure it drops into top (on low throttle) around 60kph,,
So in continuing my vague quest to replace my increasingly tired (tiresome?) D1 I came across a 99 D2 TD5 in the paper today. $16,000 asking price. The guy tells me that it has 195,000 km. Apparently it has the (complete) service books. Has had 'a couple of oil leaks and some water leaks' repaired, but no major work in the last 50,000 (duration of guy's ownership).
I'm sure this has been asked before, but what are some quick pointers on what to look for in a D2 of this type and vintage? Sure fire ways of finding head problems?
How are the autos in these things? Durable?
I'm meant to go and have a look tomorrow night and forewarned is forearmed as they say.

It's plastic head locating dowels that locate the head from side to side. Plastic studs would be unusual although one could argue that stretch bolts are "plastic".

They might be refering to plastic as stretch to yield.
