    Seat repairs 110

You will remember I had discussion on getting new seat foams for my front seats from Exmoor Trim in the UK.

Well, yesterday they arrived. In the end they were sent by airmail at a cost of about 13UKP each (cost 14UKP each), which is less than forecast, I think by wrapping them separately rather than putting them in a box.

The foams are moulded to the required shape but differ from the originals in that they are solid rather than with open cells on the back. Also, a different material. Time will tell how it compares. They came with detailed installation instructions.

I removed the cover, and gave it a good wash (now makes the backs look bad).
The original foams have sheared along the line of the frame at the sides. When these were removed I found that the welds holding the bottom plate on to the frame had cracked. I silver soldered these rather than welding, as the metal is very thin. I also added an additional strengthening piece halfway along.

Reassembly is straightforward, but not all that easy, as the foam has to be compressed to do it (this keeps the wrinkles out of the upholstery).

The result, with only a short drive to try it (about 120km) is excellent. They not only look good, but are very comfortable. As I said above, time will tell about durability, but they are certainly well worth the money, even with that postage, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone having similar problems - maybe the problem with your seats is not the design but the state of the padding?

Well, JD, fortunately for you the mail charges were miles less than the quote, which quite startled me. I import a lot of stuff from the USA and their PO charges are nothing like what you were quoted.

Has anyone on the site had any recent experience of importing from Germany, Poland, Ukraine? I have acquaintances who have had horrific recent experiences of postage charges from that part of the world. Examples:- Set of con-rod slipper bearings, 4 cyl car engine, from Germany, bearings A$35, air mail post A$170. Parts book and operators handbook for cylindrical grinder from Kiev, books A$200, postage, A$400. Round figures. Another recent one, assortment of pieces for top-of-the-table on a Jones and Shipman tool and cutter grinder, ex Northampton, bits 600 pounds sterling, total shipping incl. duty , GST, wharf, customs agent, AQIS, etc. A$900. Customs agent got his money for jam as I had to go to the wharf myself and sort out the freaking shambles he had caused from his incompetence, Customs intransigence, AQIS ignorance.

Any pics John??? I am keen to see what they are like - the foam in my drivers seat is crumbling - not sure if I do a conversion or get the current seats re-trimmed.

Brian, I recently shipped about 220kg of stuff from Germany - Australia. Cheapest way I found was DHL (German Parcel Post). Economy air (11-15 days) was about e85 for 20kg. Much cheaper than 20kg of seamail by aussie post to germany.
