Hi Crawfy
On one of the motors I have rebuilt recently, the sealing surfaces on the axillary bracket around the 'P' gasket was distorted and showed signs of corrosion.
I had a mate who does a bit of engineering work take a look at it, between us we decided to take a skim off the back of the housing including all the points around the bolt holes that were on their own and after skimming off .0016" the sealing surface look nice and tidy.
The bracket surface was ground parallel to the front where the water pump and the power steering pump bolt to.
One interesting thing I did noticed about using the paper gasket was, when I used the torque wrench, the gasket tended to squash out as the tension was applied.
.
