Hi, bit confused at what you are asking here but ...

3.5 efi is a big step up from carbs and the 3.9 is a noticable step up again.

    >> Im looking at a 3.9i 4sp auto with 206,000km for roughly 10K

Just what are you getting here, the whole vechile (a rangie??) or just moter and gear box. I don't know about the gear box but a good 3.9 with about 100k on it can be gotton for about $2000.

Even a good condition whole calssic rangie won't cost that much these days.

AHHH see the keyword here is SOFTDASH rare and expensive. 10k for one of these in really really good condition is right as it is a rare beasty, most hang on to them. I did see one on evilbay some weeks ago for 4.5k but was not in the best of condition.
The 3.9 against the 3.5 is a much more powerful engine and the auto is just surpurb and mostly bulletproof, A big difference from your 3 speed torquflite.
I went from a 82 4 speed manual to a 89 auto vogue, only a 3.5 but is smooth quiet refined and such a lovely beast to drive. I have a 3.9 to go in soon.
The soft dash is the same as the later disco 94 on radio and heater all different.
You will also notice not much room under the bonet for extras as the abs and air suspension takes up lots of room. remember u can always convert to springs. For me too much electronics, the 89 to 93 were in my opinion the best, however as a town car the soft dash would be my choice.
