    Power Loss

Hi Guys, I have a problem.

When going up a hill I get like power loss when under load. No shaking or vibrating just the engine drops back and reves as normal but it's like the power is not getting to the wheels. Like in a manual when the clutch is slipping, however its an Auto.

Injector harness was done 30,000k ago so don't think it's that.

    2001 D2 Auto TD5.

    Help please.

OK did a search which I should have done first I know however symptons can sometimes differ so decided to still post. I picked up something about "Throttle Potentiometer", what is this?

Symptons seen to be only under load like going up steep hills.

    Howdy.
You'll notice I'm a 300Tdi owner, not TD5, but the principle is the same: Diesels like lots of air and the right amount of fuel. When it gets a little off, then you loose power. Check/tighten your turbo hose fittings, clean out the intercooler, maybe get a new air filter and use some decent injector cleaner. You should notice your power come back on hills. As for the throttle, well you are now officially in the *fly-by-wire* club. In exactly the same way as a fuel tank sender or turning up the volume on a radio, the accelerator is now a potentiometer - ie resistor. You move the pedal, and the computer turns up the noise.
If after cleaning up the engine bits you still lack power, check to see if the accel pedal is making the sender unit go all the way to max.

Otherwise find somebody with a rovercom lite unit: it will diagnose TD5 probs easily.

Have you checked the turbo hoses, they sometimes get old and collapse under load, causing loss of power...?

Throttle potentiometer - isn't that the sensor connected to the accelerator pedal?

Power Loss also -V8i 94 Disco

    Ak,
I too are having similar problems. I have no problem revving up to about 3000 rpm (accelerator pedal depressed up to half way to floor) but my V8 coughs, splutters and backfires if I accelerate hard (bogs down over 3000-3500 rpm in all gears). It only bogs down in gear. Wack it in neutral and it will rev to red line. It idles fine around 650 rpm.
Can anyone provide assistance in this regard. I realised I had the problem on a recent overtaking manoeuvre on a country run.
I have a new Fuel pump, clean intake/air filters. It is running a bit rich.
Assume it has to be electrical (primary/secondary). I do need to replace clutch slave (mild leak discovered today)
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi AK
Go and start it and see if the aircon booster fan(in front of the radiator) is running with the aircon switched off.If so this indicates overheating has occured and needs resetting thru testbook.
If it is I fear you have a developing head gasket problem, problem is the TD5 temp gauge doesnt indicate minor overheating, just tends to read mid way.
Next test is when on your next trip that gets full running temp stop turn the motor off and squeeze the top radiator hose if its bulging and under a fair degree of pressure this also indicates a head gasket problem.
The early TD5s had plastic dowels holding the head, they deteriorate and move alowing the gasket to leak.Beind a 2001 I would have thought yours would have been the upgraded motor.

Sound like mine when it tried to eat the filter. Check your filter and if its full of dirt or from underneath it looks like it has been squashed then that is your problem.

clogged fuel filter line/ manifold leak after the airflow sensor, dirty airflow sensor or equivielent if its been runnning rich for ages you may also have ign problems via fouled plugs, pull one from the 2/3 cylinder on each side and have an eyeball it will yield more clues for us

Thanks for all the replies all.

Landy Andy did the air con fan test and everything was normal, checked all hoses to the best of my ability, so off to Coopers on Tuesday to get them to sort it.

Strange thing is you could drive around the city for weeks and not know you have a problem, until you came to a really steep hill. I can even on the flat drag off the lights and still power up slight inclines, its like only noticeable when under load. What worries me is going up the Mooney Mooney bridge on the freeway Tuesday morning on the way to Sydney hope I make it to the top of the bloody hill without getting rear ended. A day off work and drive into the city does not exactly thrill me.

Well I will post next week with the out come.

I had exactly this prob with a car some years ago, hopeless under load, (going up hills) turned out to be the inline fuel filter, so much drama for so little $$.....
