This is what I'd do if I couldn't afford to fix it. If you're going to swap the box it doesn't matter I wouldn't think.

I thought you were looking to convert to auto anyway?

    How bad is it?

I drove my Defender with a crook R380 for several thousand K's. You couldn't use 5th and every other gear chattered away at you at any speed.

I was waiting for it to go bang, but it didn't. I sold it still with crook gearbox (yes the buyer knew).

Just drive it till you have the dosh for a new one.
    Cheers

    hmmmmm..

the gearbox seemed as smooth as silk but the truck had heaps of drive train slop, which we thought would be transfer and rear axles....

    best laid plans...

may have to until my disco and series maxidrive sell

i budgeted 3.5k to fix the slop, wasnt expecting 5k for gearbox and axles and drive plates...... dam it :P

    such is life!

I was lucky and got away with just having to change the gear. I must admit it makes a huge difference to the amount of drivetrain slop, much nicer to drive now. mine had a short spline gear on a long spline shaft, so half the shaft had no wear at all and the new long spline gear runs on that. you could fit an oil feed plate and see how long you can get out of what you have now, or at least untill the finances allow.
