    Cicadas under my bonnet!

Ok, I have this noise, which sounds like a pack of cicardas living under my bonnet.

Only apparent when moving, not related to engine revs or load and increases and decreases with frequency for no apparent reason. Has been getting louder of late.

At first I thought it was a brake shield coming loose, but checked them all and it was not that. It sounds like a washer spinning (very loudly) on a loose bolt, but I am buggered if I know where it is. Thought it was exhaust, but it is all fine.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

It is noisy even if the aircon is off.

does the noise vary with speed......?

it might be the wheel bearings.....?
or the brake pads......does braking make it better or worse......?

or does it do it if you turn the steering......?

Zook -- does not seem to be dependent on anything other than the car moving, but not necessarily dependent on speed. It comes and goes, but I cannot seem to make it do it.

Bumps don't make a difference either. Originally, I thought it was the brake shield and that it was dependent on airflow making it vibrant, but it is not dependent on direction (or steering input).

Was thinking exhaust manifold as I had a bolt replaced recently, but they all seem OK. I am completely stuffed as to what it is.

The only thing is that is getting louder which has me concerned.

I had a squeaky rattle coming form the engine bay, and it was the bonnet hinge. Took the nylon bush out and cleaned it, I don't remember what lube I used, the wrong one will mark the paint.
    Hope this helps.
