Did my diff and steering damper survive?

    Hi all.

Went to do a quick recce on a track near my work for an upcoming club trip.

On this recce I saw a small rock on the track and thought nothing much of it. Didn't even slow down. I though I would clear it.

    Anyway this is what happened.

I have read that the front diff gear is close to the casing and a dent could press on the gear and wear a hole.

What should I feel if the steering damper is rooted? The car still seems to drive ok.

The diff will be alright i have had alot worse dents than that in a diff.
My winch challenge 90 had a massive dent in the middle of the front of the diff and was fine for years and never leaked. But i would get a diff guard if i was you

The damper should be fine as that end is only the dust shield, unless of course you have bent the shaft The dent should be ok too, i think its more of a problem if you dent the actual crown wheel hump, where yours is should be free space.

I bet I have already looked into that diff guard today

Will certainly look into one but will look at building something first as I'm a tightwad. Steering protector too.

I'll have to jack up the front tonight and have a listen. Meant to be going to Janowen 4wd park this weekend.

Thanks guys. Hopefully it is all ok. I only just missed the crown wheel hump. Pretty much right on the edge of the hump actually.

I guessed the damper would be okay. As it has actually torn a hole in the end so if that is where the gas is or whatever is in there then it would be long gone now.

    Fingers crossed.

I'll search for some guard pics. Surely there isn't much involved so long as it is strong and has some clearance to the actual diff housing for movement.

I bought one of the Graeme Coopers diff guards when I was in Sydney and I reckon it's great! Price wise it was hard to justify making one.

Don't leave me hanging. What was the price?

I'd much rather buy one either new or second hand being that I'm a bit of a slacker. I would just not like the price of it is all

I bought mine from Coopers for a tad over $100. I reckon it's paid for itself already looking at the scrapes on it now.
