Thread: bonnet release cable - how to grease it easy?

Most motorcycle shops that sell dirt bike gear can sell you a cable oiler. There are other ways of doing it, but these things are great. They clamp on to one end of the cable, and all you have to do is get a can of WD40 or Inox with a needle nozzle. The needle plugs into the oiler and you squirt away. The only hassle is that you'll need to get one end of the cable clear of all the fittings. Probably the bonnet end would be best.

I had heard of something like that but wasn't sure where to get one or how they work.

Wish I had oiled mine...
It got quite hard to pull the release (no jokes) and the bloody handle ended up breaking in half and slashing my hand and ripping of part of my fingernail.

This will work if the outer cable is not damaged and reasonably air tight.

Slip and clamp a 1/2 metre piece of plastic or rubber tubing over the bonnet latch end of the outer cable. Pour an appropriate amount of lubricant ( light oil ) down the tubing and apply air pressure to the end of the tubing. The air pressure will force the lubricant down between the inner and outer cable. Exercise the cable as you are applying the pressure. I have freed up a couple bowden cable using this meathod.

cheaper than ebay !

A better lubricant is one of the Teflon based cable lubricants that the mountain bikes use. Doesn't attract dust etc.

Yep, the teflon is good gear.

Just get a new one, cost $36 new from Landrover
