Hi, it depends what you want to use it for. If you want it as a backup crank battery than the same as the main battery will do. If you want to power devices (incl winch) you will want to go for deep cycle.

If you are smart you will get one which do both (as in truely both).
I use the Optima Yellow top Gel battery.

I personally have always use a deep cycle as they can take being run flat and then charged again, time and time again.

this is the quickest way to kill a normal battery

Much will depend on what you plan to use the 2nd battery for.

If it's just for backup then a standard battery, but if it's for running a fridge, lights etc., whilst camping then go deep cycle.

I have one of thoses as the main battery in the 90

But as i have now bought a disco going to leave the deep cycle second battery in hte 90 and buy a normal cranking battery for the 90 and put the yellow optima as the second battery in the disco

I use 2 start/crank batteries in my setup and have done for nearly 20 years, and use them for all purposes ie starting and running all auxiliaries. The trouble with deep cycle batteries in my experience is unless they are used they end up dying in the ****. With 2 start batteries, at least in the way I have mine set up, you can alternate between the 2 and keep them both charged. As said, I have used this system for a long time and still get what would be considered normal life from the batteries.

I use the same for the same reason, especially as I only usually winch with my second battery and run my Stereo.

ah well i have a new (standard) heavy duty one in the shed so i think i will use that for the time being and see how i go. might also hook up my stereo and CB to the second battery like Piddler mentioned, this way it'll still be used to some extent when the fridge isn't in there.
