    D2 charging rate

    Hi Guys
I realise you should run a lead/calcium battery in the TD5 D2 due to the hi charging rates.
Ive just instaled one of those $35 Jaycar battery monitors.
Im getting 15.1V till things settle at 14.5 to 14.8V on charge even with high beam/spots running.
Is this good or bad? Seems high to me.
I have a Cat battery that is somewhat bigger than standard, but is lead/calcium.
    Any input appreciated.
    Andrew

I don't have definite figures but those voltages seem right for the D2.

Hopefully I wont regret posting this but here goes
    Hi ,
I work for a battery company that makes calcium/calcium batteries and I can tell you 100% that calcium batteries do like to run at higher volatges than lead antimonial types. If a car is designed to have a calcium battery then it should be replaced with one. We have seen problems when a calcium is fitted to older cars. Calcium batteries survive better in higher temps compared to L/A types also. Optimal voltage for a calcium battery is around 14.8 volts, so I think your charge rate is perfect.

Hi Andrew, some of those battery monitors can be a fair way off the correct voltage so if you can get your hands on a good quality multi meter at some time and check to see just how accurate the meter is.

Having said that, the running voltage for a D2 is 14.7 so that’s pretty close.

Hi noki 3.9, I agree with you on replacing Calcium batteries with Calcium batteries. When I was getting the data from Land Rover Australia for the development of our new dual battery controllers for the D3s, the techie at LRA said that they expect to see some problems down the road when the D3s start to need battery replacements and people don’t fit the exact same battery.

The D3’s whole electrical system is optimised to get the best results while using a Calcium/Lead/Calcium battery. I think we are going to see some very interesting effects when people fit different type batteries.

The D2s are in the same boat.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys
Did test it with my multimeter at the battery, was only .2 or so different.
Did a trip up to Perth today, was getting 14.7 to 14.9 most of the time with the aircon on and fan @2 or 3.The 15+ drops after 5 mins or so,I guess its pretty normal from the above posts.
    Thanks

    hmmm, ok.

so BUB002 had a battery replaced at some stage before I bought it,, its purple, and was supplied by the VIC RACQ,, so I'm guessing its a normal lead type(but will check)

what things should I be on the lookout for??

    model 4703
    640cca

    oh, and if nothing else,,
    found an undone battery clamp

Hi, If your battery is a calcium/calcium then it will be totally sealed, no caps at all, but if its a normal type it will have caps.
Im not sure of what brand the Racv uses but I doubt that it would be a calcium. These are some brands that make calcium....SuperCharge...Delcor....AcDelco....Bx Atlas....
When buying your next battery ask if its a Calcium Calcium = both pos and neg plates are calcium, dont get a hybrid which will have a calcium and something else. It has been proven that these types are not so good. There is a company that states that hybrids are better for Australian conditions
But then again Landrovers where not designed for Australian conditions.
Calcium calcium batteries are used extensively throughout America, Europe, and Asia and now Australia

14.7 to 14.9 most of the time......

    I'm sick of this nonsense.

Why is my alternator charge rate 13.2 to 14.1

Most of the time it is running 13.2 to 13.8.

Anything to check before I fling the POS

    Hi Feral
    What type of battery????
I aint no auto ellecy but the alternator will only produce what the battery wants to take(well to my understanding).
Wondering if a normal type lead/acid battery has gone in at some stage and the higher alternator output has cooked it somewhat.
Drivesafe or Noki have probably got the answer.

Hi, the best way to check your alternator output is put in a new battery that is fully charged and then rev up the engine to about 1500rpm then check the output from the alternator at the alternator not the battery and see what it reads. Below 13.5 is too low and on older cars above 14.8 is too high. 14 to 14.6 is best for long life and low water usage. If its a new car designed for calcium batteries then 14.4 to 14.8 , Hope that helps .. Brad
ps check your alternator with the lights on and off and see what differance it makes.
