    classic transfer case

    Have bit of a problem with my transfer case lt230t 86 Rangie zf auto. Did a 1500 km trip down south wa did some 4wdriving no probs but at speeds above 80 kays she is going back into 4wd but the indicator light is not coming on but you can feel the wind up as i call it. Oil level is fine and the strange thing is that that it only moves over into the 4wd position a little to engage as when i push it all the way to the left the indicator light comes on and then to unlock the diffs which it does but pops back a little at highyway speeds it almost seems like it not going in far enough (no comments).

    The LT230 has springs that lock/unlock the centre diff. The shift lever and linkages only change the direction of force of the springs. So the lever can be pushed across to the left, but the diff will not lock until the spring can engage the dogs.

    If you have excessive transmission wind-up, the lever can be pushed across to the right, but the spring will not disengage the diff lock, until the wind-up is reduced.

    Is it correct that you can 'un-wind' a TC by engaging diff lock and running in reverse for 50 - 60 yards ?

    Often, bouncing a wheel over a driveway/gutter to get it in the air is enough to unwind the transmission. Not exactly recommended I suppose but it works for me.
