Isuzu 110 lt85 gearbox replacement options

My Isuzu 110 has a problem with its LT85, now its not fully diagnosed, but is bad enough for it to be towed home. Could be something simple or could be something bad :-(

However as the lt85 (20c) parts seem to be made from unobtanium I'm seeking advise from those more wise as to what options I have.

The cost is a significant issue, and I'm not looking for something to last for ever , just to get me through the next couple of years until the kids are out of private childcare..

    Any suggestions :

R380 ? if so what is required.

Isuzu Box + adapter to LT230 ? If so where to get adapter ?

Replace LT85 with new lt85 20c from UK (ouch at price) ?

    All suggestions gratefully received...

    cheers and thanks

LT 95 4 spd would be ya best option or a lt77 5pd from a later model rangie/fender/disco theres 2 for sale in the markets section on here this would be the easyest option as long as the bell housing bolts up the same to both boxes ....

    Cheers

Could be the splines on your output shaft. They wear until finally give way. Probably cost about 1000. I don't think the bell housing for the lt95 4 speed is the same.

Nope the lt95 b/housing wont be the same as the lt85 housing but the lt77 may fit the lt85 housing as all other bits should like t case and other bits

    Cheers

    Daryl,
I think the only suggestion that is of any use so far is for an LT95, as the isuzu has a different bell housing , and they only ever came with the LT95 and LT85 gearboxes. I'm not even sure if the bellhousings are interchangable between the LT85 and LT95. Also, the bell housing are rare as rocking horse poo. Even if an LT77 or R380 mated up to the isuzu, the motor would destroy them in no time flat!

The best thing to do to an isuzu Land Rover I have been told, is to fit a hand throttle, so when the motor is cold, you can speed the idle up to stop it shaking the vehicle to pieces.

I assume you have an ISUZU engine?

My 110 has a rebuilt LT85 which cost the PO $4500 (Mal Story from Maxi-Drive did the rebuild). I am completely happy with it. My box needed a new mainshaft as the old one had the splines completely stripped - which is the most common problem. Mal also did a lot of upgrades.

LT95 is a good strong box but I would definitely miss the 5th gear.

Late model suffix L? and on R380 is apparently as strong as an LT85, but you need a custom bellhousing (I know a couple of people who have done this).

    Don't even consider an LT77...

For those not aware - the LT85 is also called the "Santana" box as it was built for/by Santana in spain and then licenced to LR. LR was forced to fit the LT77(s) to defenders when the 2 companies had disagreements in 1990.
