No not MAF sensor, I have similar experience before and after a new MAF sensor.

I notice it more when driving home from work when the ambient temp is warmer than in the morning on the way to work.

I am going to change my intercooler hoses soon, was hoping it might go away after that. My TD5 is not chipped, my mates is and he reports same problem. It is almost like the TD5 is schizophrenic.

My TD5 2002 Defender (standard chip) started exhibiting very similar symptoms about 6 months ago at 195000kms. About the same time (but not exactly) the speedo transducer failed. It took a couple of months for me to get round to having a new one fitted and lo and behold the smptoms disappeared!

I can only surmise that the ECU was getting strange information from the transducer and was causing the problem. The thing is the problem was only occasional even though the speedo was non functioning for 2 months and even now on very odd occasions and for a very short time it still does it. Each time I had it checked no fault codes came up.

    Strange eh?!

check your induction hoses and the paper air filter. The air filter is usually a once its failed it failed item but occasionally (army rovers) have some interesting effects when the dust gets shaken out of them and they wind up again.

Another theory (was discussing this with Tombraider recently) is overboosting - closely linked to engine temp. Obviously more applicable to chipped/tuned vehicles like mine, but the theory is that the ECU's built in protection algorithm senses too much power and hobbles it.

Especially easy to bring on in my vehicle when cold, but also seems to occur when accelerating up a long hill (like Awaba) with air con on full under high loads (towing boat) - esp. when I back off the fuel then put the foot down hard again. Also happened recently when I floored it from standstill and provoked wheelspin/ETC (rush of blood). It's fairly rare in my case (the overboosting, not the rush of blood, alas ).

I believe Tombraider has a trick overboost preventer which he sells - gets wired into the ECU. In my case I suspect the boost has just still been set too high, but am also keen to try out Tomby's tune. Please correct any details Tombraider

I mentioned this to Bruce Davis who tuned mine and his view was possibly dirty/faulty airflow pressure meter in the air cleaner. Who the heck knows - but the symptom is absoluetly real... If I switch off/on after it happens, I get a whole new engine. Is this part of the 'indelible charm' of Landrovery...?

Starting to put 2 and 2 together.
JustinC belives the lag problem we experience in the man TD5s is just a case of little engine big load, wich I follow.
BlackBetty gets treated much of the time gently, but after a spanking she behaves much better.
    MOODY as Frenchie describes.
Now,are the ECUs in the TD5 like all the newies,ie they adapt to how the driver drives them and there is an adaption period between driving styles????
Would explain why when you have been treating the thing nice it goes like puss when you demand it too go hard, and why she crawls to you after a hiding and goes so well.
