Hey there...............
Thats a nice Spare wheel carrier on your Fender.......
Need pix.....
Steve
Just want to know if anyone has done this....and what was involved. With 3 kids already and no room for "friends" was contemplating it. I was curious to know if anyone has done this and if it is possible to maybe use the 3rd row of seats from a D2 as they are forward facing.
Can of worms now officially open!
Chris
PS...Many thanks to Steven Clarke for making then fitting the spare wheel carrier. hope to see ya on a trip soon!

I've seen it done with sideways seating (aftermarket) - I know theres a place in Sydney that does them. There are some forward-facing ones available ex UK (exmoor trim) but whether the seatbelt fitment passes muster in Australia I don't know.
The difficulties with forward facing seats are the intrusive wheel boxes, need to fabricate support for the seat base in the centre, access (rear or over the middle seats?) and seatbelt attachments.

Checked on Vicroads website and it can be done, legally. Now...might have to look for some seats. Inlaws have some in a Merc, neighbour from a patrol and the D2 ones are obvious!.....
looks like more researching..... ahh the joys

The FREE County ones sound like the go. However, if you want forward facing & aren't in a hurry, it may be worth waiting for the '07 Defender. I've heard the rear seats are better than the D2 ones.
I'm keen to have a look at both the forward facing rear seats and more importantly, the rear bench seat with headrests, with a view to grafting it to my Defender. No hurry for me, as the kids are still short, but I'll have to get headrest or a replacement '07 seat in the future.
Hi Haggisbasher,
See the thread at: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread...oad+area+seats
I had 4 side facing seats fitted and certified by a place in Sydney so it's now road legal. Not cheap, but good seats. They also do forward facing.
I bought 4 x kiddy safety harnesses which go over both the shoulders like 4-point harnesses to add extra lateral safety. I have some photos of my set up (minus the harnesses) in my photo gallery at:

Kids love the seats (not much fun for adults though)...
Retrofitted my County rear sideways seats into my '95 Defender a month ago. ~$40 for the steel plate, 7/16" nuts and bolts etc and $175 to get it complianced (in Qld).
Now have a 9 seater Omnibus.
