Hi guys,
we got Dune a few weeks back. She is a good natured S3 V8 (Stage 1). Recently she is exhibiting a strange behaviour when we want to talk her out in the morning or first time in the day.
When try to start you can hear the starter motor working away, but no firing. Eventually you get a fire, but she just stops. Keep trying and eventually her engine will kick in. If I accelerate from there she doesn't want to rev up straight away (just pressing the pedal gently). Eventually she gives in, but not without giving me her thoughts about getting her out of bed with a big blue-ish cloud comeing from the rear end.
One thing I also noticed and I was wondering if that is normal ... if I turn the key by one position (not starting) I can hear, what I believe to be the fuel pump, clicking away. Is that normal? The clicks get slower if I keep the key in that position.
Any thoughs? Thanks, Dante

the fuel pump will get slower as the pressure builds my old landy the fuel pump was noisey aswell but never let me down in the six years I owned it

Sounds like the points have closed up a bit retro fit electronic outa 85 on rangie and get rid of the bastard points it will start easy as then or if you cant get a rangie set up go for the crane fireball system and fit it were the points once lived and get the same easy starting and beta reliability ...
drain the tank and replace the filters or clean out the carbie bowl i would think..
depends where the sediment is..

As has already been said, the clicking IS the fuel pump. It's worth letting it pump until it starts to slow - lack of fuel can be a reason for poor starting. Make sure you use the choke unless starting from warmed. And mine has always required some warming up, plus the fuel sediemtn thing is certainly true. Mine prefers to run on ethanol blends, I think due to cleaning of the fuel lines.

Hi Dante, it sounds like the fuel bowls are emptying overnight and when you try to start her there is no fuel, hence the long crank times and start-stop when she does get a little fuel, and no throttle response when she does run.
Try letting the fuel pump run for 20 secs before turning her over, works for my 67 Daimler. Good thing about noisy fuel pumps - you know when they are working.
G'day Dante![]()
As already stated the electric fuel pump should "Tick" and cuts out when fuel pressure is reached, then pull the choke cable out 1/4inch(the little knob opposite side to the key from memory, black knob with angled line between 2 verticle lines) then give it about 3 minutes to warm, these vehicles were built before Auto Chokes and the Rover V8 needs to warm-up![]()
cheers
Dante, I have sent a reply to Pat which she will forward on re fuel tank switch. Re ignition, it does have electronic ignition but it is the type which utilises the points as well. You will find the module which looks like a heat sink,(red) bolted to the left side front inner wing just under the bonnet.
Agree re using later model RR electronic dizzy, that is probably the best way to go.
