i dont think the defender rear cross member is strong enough for the bolt on tow ball.......
the earlier countys had a stronger chassis with thicker metal.....
same with the military stuff......
you could just sell your tow bar and put the dollars towards a hayman reese one....?

Its not and the military ones that do have it fitted direct have a backing plate that goes in front of the rear memebr and is tacked in place, 2 versions of it exist 1 has the holes threaded to recieve the bolts and the other had the nuts tacked to it over the top.
The swivel pintle hook setup is different again.

If I remember right these tow bars only have a load limit of 1000kg, as opposed to the other LR and Hayman Reese at 4000kg. Should be ok if you don't tow trains or jerk it during a recovery.This is the sill tank (disregard the side steps) on my old County - and the towbar.

They are different. I fitted a 127L long ranger and had to replace the genuine with an ARB. Sold the genuine - posted it from Sydney to Port Douglas - fyi under 30 bucks postage

ARB still offer that sill tank. It's 80 litres, which would be great. However, they don't fit the current defendersThis is the sill tank (disregard the side steps) on my old County - and the towbar.
Also, that's the towbar I was thinking of. I wouldn't like it to come off during a recovery

on late model defenders you would have to significantly uprate the rear cross member to fit that style of tow hitch, esp if you wanted to use it for recoveries. not something i would be contemplating... even on my series ii swb i plated and piped the rear cross member. not a big job if you have the gear.Also, that's the towbar I was thinking of. I wouldn't like it to come off during a recovery

Incisor you just jogged my memory, I saw a late 2A tear the bolts through the rear cross member doing a recovery and I bought a military 2A that had the rear cross member plated because the pintle hook had been torn out.
