    Question Extra Recovery points

Hi, while we are discussing suspension issues, I have a question! I have an 02 Discovery TD5 Manual with standard bumpers, any suggestions on fitting front and rear recovery hooks/points as the standard ones I am told are not suitable for vehicle recovery.

D2's (and for that matter D1s) only have tie down points,, NOT recovery points.

a quick search on this forum may prove interesting.

There really is no easy answer to this one as where ever you fit a recovery point, in mosts cases means it will come into contact with the bumper during any recovery, and this means flexing or breaking of the bumper bar itself - went through all this with my D2.

In order of preference (but will depend on budget and what you use the car for) I would change front and rear bars to steel and fit recovery eyes to each.

Second option is to cut out sections of the bumpers in line with where you have fitted recovery points to the chassis to allow straps cables etc to pass through. The size of the hole will obviously dictate whether any cable/strap will again come into contact during a recovery - there is also the cosmetic issue to think about

Unfortunately there really is no easy answer and I spent some time trying to figure it out (as did others in my club plus guys with D1's) .....in the end it was obvious a bull bar and custom rear bar were the go.....although until the rear bar was done, I used the haymen reese tow hitch with the strap down the neck and the pin to hold all in place. (NOT THE TOW BALL!)

On the front, I used 2 heavy duty eyes attached to the chassis rail which did come into contact with the bull bar on certain recoveries but as the bar is steel this was not an issue. I have since had heavy duty recovery eyes fitting the front of the bull bar and to the rear bar which allows easy access to points when in tricky situations..........like burried to the diffs in mud/sand.

Hope this helps and if you are chasing some chassis mounted recovery points for the front of your D2, PM me as I have a set I no longer use.

    Good luck, Mick

O.K.here is some info on the modification plus I have the part numbers and a link to the place I got the parts from, there is a hose that goes from the compressor to the valve bank it is the middle hose on the valve bank this is the hose that get cut and where the speed controller and 90 degree fitting goes

please check that your airline is 4mm in dia before getting the parts.

the speed controller has a symbol on it you want to fit it so that there is unrestricted airflow leaving the compressor(raising the suspension) and restricting the flow back into the compressor(lowering the suspension).
The way I adjusted mine was raise it in the extended mode there is abit of stuffing around in the adjusting as if there is to much restiction ie to slow in lowering back to normal hieght the ECU times out and stops lowering the car, mine is over a minute to return to normal height.

The part numbers are as follows, speed controller pt # AS1001F-04K and the 90 degree elbow is KJL04.00 here is the link to the supplier and the spec sheets for the parts http://www.smcaus.com.au/ and the spec sheet for the speed controller http://www.smcworld.com/2002/bp_e/pdf/3401_009.pdf and the spec sheet for the elbow http://www.smcworld.com/2002/bp_e/pdf/4201_004.pdf hopefully that is helpful enough and yes I have heard about the RR bags going into the D2 but cannot find out who might have done it

Thats a bit severe David,, you can always go backwards
and you'll never know the limits if you dont get stuck occasionally,,,
