Hrly rate for repairs What a fair rate these days for a good landy mechanic.

Just paid $75 hr for a minor job on the landy, What do you reckon a fair rate is these days? OH! that was without GST.

    Cheers Sumo.

The last few jobs I've had done were twice what I expected.
Try $820 to replace a gas converter and a lock off valve and tune it up.
    $65-85 seems the go

Stealer - $120 per hour (charged in hourly segments)

LR Specialist - $85 per hour charged on actual time

Good mechanic - $70 per hour charged on actual time

Gazzz - $500 per hour charged in 2 hour segments (in his dreams anyway)

I'd say it depends on how long it takes.

For instance when I was in car audio repair we charged 1hr minimum for a job. However the most we charged was two hours maybe three if it was a video setup. Even if it took all day. The problem is if the repair ends up costing more in labour than if we just replaced the unit in question.

So if mechanics work the same way then I'd say small things may seem expensive but big things may end up cheaper than expected.

I've mentioned this previously but I was told recently by a chap in the UK that his dealer charges 120 pounds per hour - that's A$300!

I just paid $80 p/h for a LPG tune, they had it for 6 hours and charged me $240, as they found a manifold air leak that needed some further attention, though they didn't fix it.

The best I've done is $200 for the whole day for a qualified autoelec, mechanic, panel beater. That was mates rates for rebuilding an LT77.

Generally I try to do as much myself as possible.
    • 1. It's a hobby (therapy).
    • 2. It's cheaper
I don't mind paying an hourly rate if it's actual, but if they muck around and get an apprentice to practice on it, then I expect the figure to be rounded down to something acceptable.

Ok don't know about Aus , as i have not taken my truck into a main dealership

But in the UK hourly rates are

    £90 an hour for defender

£120 for a Disco and Freelander

    £150 for a range rover

Straight up. And you think $75 an hour is expensive

IMHO it depends on the fault... I charge a varying rate starting at you park it and work on it, use your tools, have my gear standing by for just in case, pick my brains occasionally, use my disposal gear and maybe the odd spanner thats about $25 a day + a plate for the BBQ with some drinks on the side after.

IF im doing it all, your car hasnt been cleaned since it left the factory 25 years ago, every nut and bolt is rounded off, everything is jimmied in with other bodged in parts that shouldnt be there thats $70ph with you supplying the whole bbq, all the grog and you have to stand there so i can hurl abuse at you

IRL it depends on the quality of the mechanic you get, brake work can be done for as little as $50ph at a brake specialist and general spanner twisting can go as high as $175ph.

    have fun.
