    Buggered Box ??

    Hey Everyone Happy Easter! i was talkin to a mate who is a mechanic but not on Land Rovers and he seems to think Something in my Gearbox could be Stuffed i havent driven other Defenders except my own so i was wandering if other Td5 Fender Drivers could help when i put it in either 1,2,5,Reverse the gear stick it quiet tight/stiff in its place but when i put it in either 3,4 gear the Leaver goes a bit wobbly you can move it around in the gear place more so than the other gears. is this normal ?? should it happen ?? if not could someone help me with what could be wrong ?? (Note this isnt when the vehicle is moving)

    its not ment to happen but it does...

    its to do with the layout of the shift bias and detend. It doesnt mean anything is terminal inside the box its all external and isnt anything to panic about yet.

    The fact that it only happens in the center gears means one of 2 things that the springs are a little weak/dirty and not holding in the middle detents properly or that the selector bush is worn.

    Id not panic about it if its not actually effecting gear shifts but once it gets to the point where your not confident that the shifter is in on the right selector then its time to have a look, hopefully this isnt untill you have to drop the box or pull the engine for some other reason.

    I don't know about defenders, but I have heard there is a well known problem with some R380.

    A plate near the base of the shift lever, that is used somehow with the bias springs, has a tendency to crack and bend.

    when that plate lets go you usually have over agressive springing back to the center or all springing is biased off to one side.
