    rear main seal

Hi guys, I think my disco has got a bit of an oil leak from the main rear seal, just wondering if anyone has replaced theirs, if so how hard is it, or how much did it cost to get it done.

    Cheers

Easyish to do but have to take the engine out (or gearbox, but i find the engine easyer unless you can get the car 8 foot in the air)
The rear main oil seal is behind the fly wheel. Easy to do when you get to it ,But geting to it is the difficult bit. The seal cost about $20 (but i have not bought one in Aus , but in the uk they are about £5)
To get it replaced by someone else is always a hurtfull job. Seal cost about $20 as said before , but will charge you hundreds and hundreds to fit because of where it is .

This is one of those instances where cost of part is neglible .....BUT cost of labour because of the amount of labour involved is HORRENDOUS!!!!.......

.............might be woth trying a $10 can of Engine Oil Seal Stop-Leak......I've used Nulon and it worked together with using Valvoline MAXLife Engine Oil for High Mileage Engines 20W/50

a mate of mine had his replaced when he had his D1, only cost him a couple of hundred from a Lube mobile guy that was landrover trained.

if it isn't that bad, i would go the way byron suggested, 'seal reconditioner and clean out the engine breathers, to prevent too much crankcase pressure.
i was never convinced the stuff worked, but I had oil pouring out of the front seal of my old fergy tractor , couldn't get the nut off to put the new seal in, so thought i would try it, used the nulon stuff. The leak has stopped. strange .

Where abouts are the engine breathers and what would be the best way to clean them out?
Also is this nulon stuff pretty straight forward to use? Im guessing it involves dropping all the oil out first.

    Cheers

Fitting the rear main seal on 300Tdi is not like a normal seal and you must follow the instructions which are printed on the package. Read and understand the instructions before removing the seal from the package.

The engine breather is on the right side of the head/rocker case. There is a plastic oil separator with a hose coming from it. The hose runs back, then around behind the head and across to the underside of the inlet hose (between the air cleaner and the turbo inlet).

Yes mate any of those seal condtioners will do, when i was claeaning up in the shed this pm, found the empty bottle i used in the tractor it was actually the wynns brand.
Easy to use, just pour it into the engine through the same hole you add oil. Just follow the instructions on the bottle.
