Tusker referred to the rovingtheglobe site. I live in the same town as these guys and saw at first hand the one which completely failed and the second one (different vehicle) which was about to fail.
My opinion (Mech.e deg.) is that the design/materials/manufacture is very substandard.
I could elaborate, but this is probably not the place. My view, stay with the rubber band.

Just contributing a bit more to the "Well I never knew that!" section, I found this on the London Taxis International website http://www.lti.co.uk/previous-models/fx/
- In 1982, the FX4R is released; using a 2.25 litre Land Rover diesel engine (to comply with emissions legislation)
- The FX4S, the first cab to use the LTI name, was produced between 1985 - 1987, using a 2.5 litre Land Rover diesel engine

What a response!!!!
Thanks for the input guys.
Having had a cambelt go on a Mazda MX6 a while back I am a HUGE advocate of regular replacements. I heard about the gearing plates as an alternative but probably won't go down that path.
I'll take Abaddonxi's advice and spend my dosh on more fun things.
Thanks a million
