on the back I used to have on a series a pole mounted vertically that held the light on a spigot with a water proof plug in the roof. (light on pole small lead to plug)
adjacent to it was a nother small set of holders that held 2 pipes, both with the electrical connectors on it (think extention cords) so that they could be screwed together and put on the spigot with the light on top to elevate the lamp.
Not hard to setup or water proof and the poles doubled as jack handles.
My camp light is a 12V fluoro.
I replaced the cig lighter plug with a trailer plug and ran a 12V wire to an spare pin (pin 5 from memory) in the trailer socket at the rear bumper on my disco.
The lead is long enough for me. If I'm tenting it it reaches inside the tent with more to spare. If I'm swagging it, I generally hang it from the disco roof gutter. Does not draw much current from the battery.
Before this I used gas lights with mantles, but prefer the fluoro for convenience.
