    rear camping light construction (defender)

    Hi all,

Has anyone made one of those camping lights for the back of their car? What size light did you use, how did you wire it up, what parts and how much did it all cost etc etc. Can you get low amp drawing globes so the battery doesnt suffer. Are they worth having?

    cheers
    Jimmy

Not a camp light as such but I have an auxilliary reverse light (small Narva flood) wired on the ute, direct to the battery switched by a relay. It comes on at the same time as my normal reverse lights. I have a 60W globe so as to not overly dazzle the barge guys when backing onto the ferry ! There's no reason I couldn;t have put a seperate switch on it I suppose.

Cost - dunno got it as part of a raft of things my auto lekky did for me but it wasn;t much.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I had a merit plug put into the rear of the Defender and then made up a light from 2 12 volt fluros which I bought at a caravan supplies store. I put a fair length of lead on it so it can be mounted on the side of the Landy for cooking and genral camp use or can be run out to light up other areas.

I have used this under the bonnet to fix a fan belt and hose out the back of nowhere. The advantage of the two lights is you can run one or both depending on how much illumination you want. I had this run off the auxillary battery and have a Piranaha battery system so you don't have to worry about this flattening the battery.

It drwas bugger all and is a nice soft light - and cheap too.

I will try and get a couple of photos and put them on the forum

I made one that goes in the back section of the 110 ...

I camp / 4wd / Dive alot and I needed a light for the back when the door was open.

I replaced one of the rear handles at the top / back of the door (inside) with a custom mount to hold one of these Lights .. and I put the other one on the side in the giraffe window.. all powered from the aux battery, switched on from the back of the defender.

    Works really well.

This is what it looks like,

Oh them little foamy things is to stop it ratteling til I get time to move it back a little..

And yes my roof is sagging, and I am scared to know how much to fix that

Paid $320 on the gold coast for the whole roof-lining, done by a boat/upholstery trimmer, looks a million bucks now!

Your lights look good too - great idea

Side of the car / camp shower / tents / Camp site / where I setup my camera gear when diving, road side accidents ...

All been successful... the light is aimed down, and works well at lighting up a whole camp site... I will order another two soon to do the other window (rhino window) and then my lighting would be complete ...
