    are BFG's AT worth it?

at the moment i run with Michelin XZY 7.50. these tyres are well rated with those who drive the length of africa for being robust. i have driven on them for about a year and the wear is virtually none. the one problem i do have is that they are 'kin heavy and very stiff, so i am thinking of replacing them. here in the u.k. everybody raves about BFG AT's as being the best thing since sliced bread and they are top of the list at the moment. however asking opinion is a waste of time over here "buy the BFG's" they all say. so now i'm on the other side of the world asking you guys who aren't afraid to tell it as it is. my driving is mostly road and gravel/rocky trails. no mud plugging and i want comfort, good road holding/braking and a long life.
please remember that i live in the u.k. so therefore can't get olympic steeltreks or 3.9 izusu 110's (pitty though).

You'll get a varied answer from over here. As far as I'm concerned I'd never use them again. I had 6 of them on a D1 for about 20,000km in which time 2 blew out the side walls, 3 got stacked and the all developed cracks running around the side walls. All lost significant chuncks of tread! I rotate my tyres regularly so the front/rear/spares all wear consistently.

I found the BFG AT's were quiet and very good in the wet on sealed roads. Off road and on dirt tracks they suffered. Any rocky ground meant bits of tread would chip off. If you had to lower the pressure the side walls bagged out badly and in sand this meant that you got significant abrasion on the side walls. The side wall cracks were a concern and after 2 blow outs over the time I'd had the tyres I got rid of them.

BFG metyric sizes have been made in Asis for a few years now. Softer compound, better on road, more problems off-road.

Chipping is a real problem with the ATs.

I'm happy with my Goodrich silent armours, wouldb't go back to BFG.

I havent had problems with the bfgs and have just fitted them again...

it has to be said tho, previosuly Ive only run them on series rovers which are lighter and slower than the current rovers..

I'll be keeping an eye on them for the next 3 months and if you like will let you know.

But from the ipswich to brissy run for work and the play I had with em on the amberly driver training area Im happy with them thus far even if they are a little more squirmish on the black top.

Like DM_TD5 said you will get a varied response.

I have BFG A/T at the moment and won't be getting them again. I mainly use mine in the Vic high country which can be very rocky and they have chipped quite badly. Infact they chipped badly 1st time out.

but maybe mine were a bad batch as i would say most people here rave about them here.

My first set of BFGS went for 110,000kms with no cracks, chips or punctures - I did a fair bit of on road plus lots of off, inlcuing great central road and numerous in-land OZ tracks. I've had my second set for 10,000kms and they are just as strong. All this on a defender, so I'll be going them again I reckon.

No, it's just the AT's nature. I know of too many other cases of tread damage on AT's. Now the MT's are whole different beast and are a much better tyre, but of course they are a lot more aggressive and really can't be compared.

Tusker: I'm interested to hear how the Silent Armour tyres go. They'd only just become available when I put new tyres on my Disco last time and sizes were limited.

    snip

Fair enuff. I'm about to throw them back on for a few months.

Bought 'em last year, for the LROC simpson trip. Quiet, ride & steer well. I was keeping an eyes on everyone's tyres on the trip. My rears just started to show chipping by the end, The Coopers were the worst, BFGs in-between.

Cheaper at the time than MTRs too.

Surprised the Coopers were worse than the BFG's. From what I've found Cooper S/T's don't chip anywhere near as much as BFG A/T's. I'm currently running Cooper S/T's on both Rover's (my Defender came with 6 brand new ones). I'm only worried about the reputation Coopers are now picking up for delaminating, but so far no problems.

What was the wear rate like on the Silent Armours?
