Exclamation How good/safe are BFG M/T's on wet roads?

I'm vaguely thinking of going to 235/70x16 or 225/75x16 or 245/70x16 BFG M/T's on my Disco 1 3.9, but was hoping to use them all the time on road and off-road......what are they like on a wet road?....."exciting", "thrilling", "full of surprises at every turn"....?......BTW - I'm used to Michelin XPC's on road.

I have 245/75 R16 BFG MTs on my 99tdi auto disco and have done about 25K on them so far, the tyres previous to them were the Michelins and unless you really throw your disco around on the road I doubt you would find the grip boundaries wet or dry, so far mine have given nothing but confidence in all weather and road conditions. About the only real difference I notice is the increased tyre noise, but given the benefits off road I will live with it.

Byron, can't speak specifically for BFG MTs but my Cooper STTs have at least as much on-road grip as the originals.

The Coopers and also the Goodyear MTR have sipes on the blocks which
provide on-road grip and help squeeze water off the road surface - something I don't believe the BFGs have.

I also switched from Michellin XPCs to Coopers on my old Disco II, and found no compromise. Gav

I second what fisho says. I have the 245/75-16 BFG MT as an off road tyre and they perform well on road as well as off. I know several people who use theirs on road all the time....Chris.

Probably not as good on wet bitumen as some highway terrain tyres.

When I bought the rangie many years ago, it had all terrains, which I hated in the wet. So I put bfg mt's on it and have not had any issues.

Current BFG MT's are fine in the wet, and far superior to the Bridgy MT's I had three and a half years ago. It was noticeable straight away, going from Bridgestone to BFG. Grip is far better in the wet than an MT tyre has any right to have, and break away is nice and progressive if you push it that far.
    On my second set now.

Why are you worried about wet performance anyway ? It doesn't rain anymore

LRO mag several years ago did a good tyre comparison exercise which included stopping distance in dry and wet conditions. Needless to say the stopping distance of MT on a dry road was worse then AT. The stopping distance in the wet increased by about 15%

At the time of reading that article had a 110 on BFG AT and a 90 on BFG MT. Went round a corner and there was a bus stationary at a little used bus stop On a wet road I nearly rear ended the bus! Oooops. I felt at the time that the 110 on AT would have behaved better.

Lesson learnt! In the rain/wet road I ease off 5-10mph

All sounds good so far.....I was told that the M/T's were OK (even without sipes) for wet road use........Wet roads?.....well theoretically if it rained, or more likely a water main bursts and runs for hours before the Water Board get on to it!

Only ever had hassles once with mine in the wet and that was taking off on the white part of a pedestrian crossing. I broke traction. Other han that I was very impressed with their wet grip.

I run 255/85x16 BFG MT's and have found them to have less grip in the wet then AT's which had less then the HT's. When brand new they seemed really poor in the wet and I started wondering if I did the right thing buying them for a daily driver. By the time I put a few thousand km's on them they were definitely better.

Overall you do get used to them and leave a little longer for stopping and go a little slower around sharp bends. IMO they are worth the on road compromise for the much increased performance offroad.
