    belt tensioner-98 300tdi

    Hi
after replacing the PS pump last week I noticed , only the once, that the belt tensioner was hopping a bit after about 70km. After I drove it another 70 odd km it has now stopped hopping. I was wondering if this a forerunner to a tensioner problem. If so, can the spring be replaced or does the whole unit need replacing. And..where is a good place to get the bits?

    thanks

Maybe you got some crap on the belt (either side) & it's taken this distance to sort it.

But then I could be wrong. Just ask utemad.

Mine was jumping around and yes it means the tensioner spring has lost it's tension if it is a lot but they do move a bit.

I found that Land rover dealer was the cheapest for the tensioner as they are not rebuildable.

this pm it started again and an edge of the belt let go....so I hope it was just a faulty (new!!) belt. Seems fine now with the old spare on it.??

My V8 belt was squealing and I was quoted $150 for a new aftermarket tensioner. I shimmed the driver's side edge of it and now it only seldom squeals.
Mine never shredded the belt though

I don't think it is the spring so much as the rubber component of the tensioner. It wears and the tensioner puts a wobble into the belt which tends to shred the edges, cure is a new one

how is the bearing? Mine only failed last week, it didnt shudder but it was noise, a loose bearing might affect the alignment of the pulley with the belt

Just replace the tensioner, that is the problem.

You cant rely on it if you just bodge it up, mine wash $152 from land rover and the original lasted a bit over 200000km's so it's money well spent.

it only takes 5 mins to change and you will feel the difference in tension when you put the nes one on.

    Replace it.
