What Oil are people using in LT95

Spoke to Mal Story today and he suggests that I use Castrol VMX 80 in an LT95.
I know that Rover recommend 20-50w engine oil but over the years there has been much discussion about the inadequacies of Motor Oil in high loads in a Gearbox environment.
I guess I am just trying to make an LT95 that was recently reconditioned at great expense last as well as it can.

    Any suggestions appreciated

Yep 20w50 engine oil is all i used when i had a 4 speed rangie
so the cost of engine oil is cheap why not change it at regular intervals

VMX80 is a very light gear oil - its used to improve cold shift performance in 'conventional' gearboxes. I suspect it is actually a bit lower in viscosity than 20/50 engine oil (engine and gear oils use a different viscosity rating system).

LandRover may have oriinally specified 20/50 engine oil due to no lightweight gear oils being available in the 70's/80's?

Then there are synthetic engine oils - I have been meaning to try some in my LT95, however most are lighter than 20/50

being the sad bugger I am I just looked at the LR manual for the LT95 is says either: 15w/50, 15w/40, 85w/90, 80w/90 for UK temperatures.

For warmer temps ie -10 to 30+ recommended is : 80wEP, (what ever EP is?).

Wasting your time and money doing that often.
    40,000km is what's recommended.

Use the best engine oil u can get and add 1 to 1.5 litres of Moreys engine oil stabilzer both in the gearbox and the transfer case. Did this after rebuild at 230k still going untouched after 525k and very very quiet and smooth.

EP = Extreme Pressure ........as in, say, 75W/90 EP = 75 rating at freezing point/0 degrees Celsius or "Winter" and a 90 rating at 100 degrees (Summer/hot) and is rated as being suitable to be used in "extreme pressure" situations such as gear upon gear point to point pressure as in meshing gears in gear boxes, diffs etc
