Ben I stand corrected and on my way to R&E to grab an AC delco and to find out why the airbox eats standard filters.
That website is a very informative read, and a couple of others I looked up as well as a discussion today with an engine builder mate of mine.
I thought I had a fair idea of what I was doing but in the same vane as that Arlen bloke, I had only really read promotional jargen and hadn't actually seen anything scientific to sway my opinion.

So what effect, if any does temp, humidity, engine revs etc have on a filters ability to filter dust?
While I'm sold on the AC Delco (well at the moment anyway) How good is the genuine Land Rover air filter, who makes them?
Is the AC Delco air filter the best solution? is there better again?
A friend of mine that used to work for Holden said that in a memo from GM they stated on certain models of Rodeo if used in dusty conditions to fit Uni Filters as the paper element deteriorate very quickly. Is there some standard paper element are made to or is it up to the manufacturer to do whatever they think is right?
So really does Uni Filters and any of the others belong in the basket with the likes of other snake oil products such as Hi-clone?

:) Paper Filters , That's all I use on mine , car's done almost 180 K . I use the Donaldson Filter on the snorkel for dust etc on Long trips.

Bear in mind that when looking at these results not to get hung up on how each brand of cellulose media performed relative to each other in this particular test as suppliers for individual applications within one brand often vary, look more at how the different types of media compare to each other.
An AC-Delco isn't the best filter for your vehicle, it only tested the best of the cellulose filters in that particular test. Not really surprising as it is the OE filter for that engine. Another brand of cellulose fibre filter may test best on another engine.
Most AC Delco's available in Oz aren't even sourced from the US. Fact is that most filter manufacturers only produce a narrow range of filters in their particular brand segment, and outsource all other production. Even the biggest rivals and biggest filter manufacturers like Donaldson, Fleetguard/Cummins and Mann-Hummel buy off each other or the same outside sources to fill holes in their range. Example is the Donaldson oil filters I use. they are made by Champion Laboratories in the US using Donaldson media. The same company make the same filter for Fleetguard. I know of several Donaldson filters that are made by Baldwin, and a lot of Purolators are sourced from Asia these days. The list goes on.....
Look at that testing as comparing media types, not which brand is better.

I had a paper filter on the 300TDi for the first 80,000 km then tried the Finer filter brand and had almost 120000 k's of use with regular service of the filter. Then the foam seemed to disintegrate and a large chunk went through the turbo and bent an impellor fin. The rest ended up through the intercooler and engine.
The turbo fix was relatively cheap however the lesson I learnt was that the reusable oil filter does not create better economy as the cost of paper filters over the time frame would have evened out the cost of the turbo repair.
I'm now back onto the paper filters as they seem to have come down considerably in price.
Something for the oiler to consider "How do you know when the oil filter is about to self destruct?" It looked and felt fine when serviced about 2000 k prior to disintegration. The section came from the back of the filter the two other layers were still OK and the metal mesh on the backing filter with about 1cm of foam around it was where it came from.
I'll more than likely go for the AC Delco anyway as my auto parts supplier is an AC Delco agent but then again I may go back to Baldwin as thats my filter supplier at work.
I think which ever rep comes in first or where I order parts from next time I remember about the airfilter.
Has anyone said anything about taking there used paper air cleaner to Brisbane Air Cleaners at Brendale.
The last Car i bought came with 4 Used air clears cartridges and I had the washed. 3 came back good 1 failed the test, they don't charge you unless they come up good.
How much is cleaning worth?
