SupporterJust spent an hour cleaning mud out of the fuel filler lock.
The day after driving in the rain all afternoon on a dirt road in west Tas, I couldn't get the key into the lock. It only went about halfway in.
Fortunately the lock turned even with the key halfway in.
Finally got around to checking out the problem and after dismantling the filler cap I found the lock half full of mud.
The problem is now fixed, but I wonder how common this is and whether there is a way to avoid it.
It could have been inconvenient if the lock had jammed in a way that stopped the filler cap coming off.

i have driven though deep mud, water etc all in the name of fun and surprsingly never had the probelm, however it has frozen on me on a few occasions.
not sure the best way round it but the uk military use a flap velcroed onto the surrounding area to keep the mud out, unless a more than libaral dosing of wd would keep the internals clean, just make sure the little slide cover plate is not sticking open.

What about wrapping the entire fuel filler door in Gladwrap before off-roading?

SupporterAs it's a cab/chassis, there is no door over the filler cap.
I wasn't even offroading when it happened. It happened on the roads between Waratah, Corinna and Stanley in Tas.
I had never really taken any notice of the little slide cover plate before, but I suspect I will from now on. I suppose it might have been stuck open. It's closing properly at the moment.

Allan, it might sound silly, but when I was driving Interstate, my Mack had 4 fuel tanks with locking caps and whenever there was roadworks my locks used to get gummed up with grit and mud, solution, after cleaning crud out I used to stick a gob of chewing gum over the keyhole, it kept the crud out and generally lasted 2 weeks before needing replacing, and diesel fuel didn't seem to affect it, except for the taste, BTW are you back from Tassie yet, Regards FrankOriginally Posted by vnx205

We are back from Tas after a couple of very enjoyable weeks mostly on the west coast at the end of March.

Doesnt it have a flap / over the key hole ?

SupporterIt has a little spring loaded flap that is pushed aside when the key is inserted, same as the door locks.
For some reason it didn't keep the crud out. Perhaps it was jammed open. It would only take a little bit of dust or grit to stop it sliding closed when the key was removed.
I never bothered to look to see if the flap closed properly in the past. I will now.
