Rewiring Series LR's

I found it easy to rewire from scratch. This means that you can use 4mm wire for all applications and 6mm for headlights. You can solder all your connections to reduce voltage drop as well as soldering in fusible links on the supply side of the headlight / high beam relays. It also means that you can choose the type of fuses / relays you want to use and their location. You can color code in colors that are easy to remember.

The easiest way is to just wire each component, one at a time, then gather the wires together to form a loom. 7 core trailer loom is handy for addressing all the power needs to the rear of the vehicle.

Hmmm, sounds like I'm really better off calling out the auto electrician I think. It's probably the most sensible idea then, at least I cant stuff it up this way. I'm happy to do most of wiring to the lights, swtiches etc, its actually the charging system from the Alternator that I don't really understand. Hmmm, maybe if I get the auto electrician to wire the motor up and the alternator, and I'll do the rest perhaps??? The trailer wire loom is an excellent idea!

I had to rewire my 2A from scratch as there was nothing there when I got it. I did it myself as I was too much of a Scrooge to buy a ready made loom. Getting suitable wire in enough colours to make the job easy was difficult.
I have tried to use heavier gauge wire as much as possible and have run earth wires to most things. I bought a box of connectors from Repco so i could disconnect any area in future if I needed to.
If you are considering doing it yourself get a decent soldering station and teach yourself to solder if you don't know how.
So far it seems to be OK but the beast is not yet on the road.
If you get someone to do the job it won't be cheap.

DIY at least you know what and where all the wiring is.
When I finally get my toy up and going Im doing my own wiring.The original wiring is basic,as long as everything is protected with fuses/circuit breakers all is good.
My Trackside headlight upgrade and SC40 were easy,do it take it steady do it good and you will be happy.
All the wire sizes are there on Mustang Sallys,the lack of easily available wire colours is the main problem.The easy fix is make a seperate loom for each wiring system ie lights,ignition,etc etc

Is your 2a a Military one or Civi one, and is it a Positive Earth Vehicle (seperate wiper motors and press solenoid starter) or is it a late 2a "D" suffix chassis, as they were Negative Earth from Manufacture, (key start, flick switches, cable operated wipers) This will have a bearing on the type of loom, Vintage wiring harnesses do all types, in both cloth and plastic looms, and will make up a loom to order;) so it would not be to hard to specify V8 alternatered, with back up lights or whatever you need.:)

NOTE: all lucas lights and gauges have their own Earths. all earth wires are BLACK.

Gday UncleHo, As far as I'm aware its a Military, but that said its also a bastard creation with what looks to be an aftermarket chassis etc. I'm certain it is negative earth also and does have the key start, flick switches and the winscreen scrapers are connected with a cable from the PS. I didn't realise that Vintage looms did do custom jobbies, and it would make sense for them to make to order. If they will do a loom though to suit the V8 alternator then that would be magic.

VWH will do all mods you want. When I did the SII I asked to do earth wire to EVERYTING, extra tank wires, extra widscreen wiper wires as well as alternator mod instead of the genarator. Talk to them if you have doubts and want your wiring colour coded as per original spec. They do a neat job. Not a plug for them just a happy customer.

Turtle beat me to it, but vinwire (who make their looms themselves) can modify the looms to whatever you need. Just plug it in and you are on your way. they will even add extra wiring for accessories!

I'm just off the phone from Paul at Vinwire and they can make me the loom with all of the necessary modifications that are required for the conversions that I've done to the old girl. The cost for the loom will be about $440 or similar depending on the additional mods. Now I'd better check out the IIa to see what I need. :D

If you go down this route - make sure they make you one with a proper fuse box - not the stock IIA 2 fuse job. And make sure you ditch the external voltage regulator and use an alternator with an internal reg.

Like some others, I rewired mine myself from scratch, using large diam wire and ditched as many lucas parts as possible in the process (replaced with HELLA or similar).
