    Unhappy Bad Vibrations

    Greetings,

I have a 2001, S2 Disco TD5 5 speed. I have noticed since a fantastic trip to NSW travelling just under 5,000 KM that I am getting a vibration through the body of the car. It happens accelerating between 90 and 100km/hr. As I travel up the SE freeway in Adelaide each day it only happens accelerating as I checked while travelling down the freeway. Accelerate = vibration, foot off the peddle and no vibration at same speed. The Disco has done 107,000Km.
Anyone have ideas as to what may be causing this?? I have not spoken with a mechanic yet.

    Cheers

When I stuffed the donut in mine it was a severe vibration when accelerating at any speed. I don't think it was gradual unless I didn't notice it until it got really bad.

Although it is easy to check anyway.

    tyre balance, rim damage
these would show up all the time. uni joints, espcally the double cardin joint in the front shaft, pinion bearings, transfer case input/output bearings are more prounced under load/acceleration.
check the play in the uni's..shouldnt be any, same with the all the input/outputs.
if i had to guess ide say the dc/uni's from factory they cant be re greased. unis that dont get grease dont last long.

    cheers phil

Dave, next time it does it, pat attention to the road surface. Some sections of the M1 have visible corrugations which can be seen, especially with the light in the right direction.

It may possibly not be your vehicle but the surface.

From my experiences when the donut goes, you will notice it most when taking off from when stopped as it forces the donut the hardest then. When the front shaft DC unis go, they tend to give vibrations at approx those speeds. I would definately get under nad give the front shaft a twist with the handbrake on, but the transfer and gearbox in N to see if there is any movement in the DC joint. If there is, then I would pull the shaft while under there as they can do a hell of a lot of damage when they let go.

If your donut is only mildly damaged it will vibrate under load at 90-100 kms/hr which is the usual problem speed for td5 disco's, the vibe will reduce on over run at that speed. If it is not the donut remove the front shaft immediately as a double cardan joint failure normaly doesn't give much warning before it lets go with devastating results.
    hope this helps.

    Thanks Guys,

Spoke with my mechanic and he said it could be either the donut or DC joint so she's booked in for a service and hopefully not too expensive repairs. 4Bee, I tested it at different places on the freeway both up and down the hill and same thing was happening. I do know of a couple of spots you are refering to, one of which is on the uptrack on the old cement corner bend.

    Cheers
