Thumbs down Factory Defender Jack Warning

Well, I have just had something happen that you'd hope would never happen

I was doing a spring change, and we jacked the car up (using the factory jack) and took the wheels off. A mate was helping me.. he did the jacking. We had just undone the spring retaining bolts, and the upper shocky bolt.

Just about then BANG and the jack blasted out the back and the car dropped onto the hub. My mate had his knee between the body and the ground and was pinned I had a trolley jack handy and jacked under the axle and lifted it off him. He's in hospital now being checked. I think he'll be ok but this is very very bad.

It was level ground, and there were chocks in front and behind the front wheel. I didn't have stands under it because I don't have any stands that are anywhere near high enough. I jacked it up again and noted that the pole that goes into the bumper steadily works its way out as you jack. I did it again with the jack leaning into the car and I don't think it's moved but I'm really shaken by this

I went to repco and supercheap and neither have stands anywhere near high enough. I don't know what to do as I don't trust the jack at all now.

    Be warned and watch this.

    A bit of bad luck,
even when having to change a tyre i have got into the habit of putting the tyre i take off just under the sill, regardless of the car,
just in case the jack decides to fall off or slip,
even when having a squiz with a wheel off, that way it will only fall onto the tyre, and the rim.
Ps i don't have any stands either.

Its a bit late but hope it helps in future, is your mates leg alright?

Glad to hear your mate is okay.

I bought 4 rachet stands, 3000 kg rated, from AutoPro, not too expensive from memory.

They have a height - fully extended, of 450 mm, and when I do need to go higher, I have some very sturdy timbers that go underneath.

    Gee's Glad your mates ok.

Im with Ladas on this one, I have about 6 sets at work and 2 sets at home, you can buy bigger higher rated ones, I got some from a company called Bearing Wholesalers that are about twice the size of Ladas for when I do the tractors, they were only about $60 for the pair.

Maybe we should rivive the workshop safety thread again, as this was covered by a few people in there.

Yep I am with Ladas on this one, I will always have my trusty timber blocks araound for just this occasion! Even made my own adjustable stands which in true Australian fashion are massively over engineered.

my wife was worried about me lying under the fender so she bought a 3 ton armstrong trolley jack and stands that are 400mm (not extended)
twas a good fathers day. just makes the jobs easier (and safer)
i'm thinking of buying some of the $60 ebay ratchet stands and welding them into some rims for height and stability.

ps i'm an ambo and while it is infrequent that people get pinned by cars, it is a recognised injury.

always tuck a spare wheel under the body of the vehicle you are jacking

if the vehicle falls off the jack it will land on spare wheel and crush you
