Thread: Thermo fans

I had an EL Falcon while I was living in Roxby Downs S.A and the cooling system was second to none ( 45+ degree days ). I was also driving trucks for a while and had a neat litle switch to turn the hourton fan on when you are just about to hit a big hill. The EL fans I believe have 4 stages aswell as they have a half speed, full speed and 1 or 2 fans running. Worthwhile fitting the switch in so your not relying on heat to switch the fans on. Also good for those cold climates if you were to fit a 3 way switch for completely off, thermo switch control or just on. My old Rolux wouldnt get up to temp on a cold winters morning unless I really gave it a hard time.

A mate of mine fitted an EL set to his XC Cobra which is a worked 5 litre and drives it with out any hassles even in high traffic situations. The shroud is an absoloute must though, they are absoloutly useless with out a shroud. Have also seen them on race cars with straight mechanical fans and the thermos installed on the intake side of the radiator.

The fan spins free so it's OK,but I have replaced it once,$364.00 only to find out that falcon clutch fans bolt straight on,$20.00 at the wreckers. The mechanic at Dungog that doe's work on it from time to time told me that they are better than original as they pull more air as the hub is the same but the fan is bigger.Overheating has never been a problem. Most of the replies are from Rangie drivers,is the rad in them bigger,V8's need less cooling? It has created some interest. under normal driving conditions the v8s dont make as much heat as the diesels but start to work them and then they get a mite warmer...

when i was experimenting with cooling assistance for the 93 v8 disco I had at one stage I ran it sans thermo fan and just had the aircon Fans on.. surprisingly this worked for city driving providing I didnt let it idle around too much at low speeds....

The reason behind it was one scorching summer i was on the paramatta car park doing 1low with a fully loaded horse float on and the little idiot over heat light came on...

with the viscos and the aircon fans on flat out it never overheated again.

The V8 radiator is full width and the falcon thermo fans and shroud can be fitted behind the radiator.

The 300TDi radiator is nowhere near as wide as the V8 radiator and has the intercooler to the left of the radiator. The fan shroud needs to cover the radiator and the intercooler. The falcon thermo fans and shroud will not fit because the radiator and intercooler hoses are in the way.

I run two sets of fans (aircon ones in front, pacet ones behind the radiator) wired separately in case of a failure
I had problems with temp sensors using the capillary ones you have to squeeze in a radiator hose as they cause leaks so I found a elegant solution from x-eng in the UK - a machined alloy piece that fits two temp senders -
    http://www.x-eng.co.uk/X-Therm.asp?MID=38

you can use two senders so the fans come on at different engine temps and no more leaks!

    Hello,

I am interested in trying a setup very similar to the X-ENG-Therm as quoted above.

Has anyone found a supplier of a similar kit here is Australia. eg. a 38mm hose adapter with a boss that fits a dual temperature thermo switch.

The concept is easy, but I really dont want to **** about with making sure the adapter has the right thread size etc. for the thermo switch. If someone has already done this, and is willing to impart their knowledge I would be extremely grateful.

    Thanks in advance.
