From memory, shut the door and undo the hinge off the body, big PITA for such a simple job.
Hi All,
My door mirrors have worked loose, and I notice that, with the genius that is unique to Landrover, these have been installed so that the screws are behind the hinge flange.
I am hoping that I can:
1. Close and maybe wedge the door to prevent movement.
2. Unscrew the hinge retaining screws on the door, and turn the door part of the hinge so the the screw heads are accessible.
3. Tighten the mirror screws, move the hinge back, and re-install the hinge screws. BTW, these appear to be Torx heads - does anyone know what size?
Has anyone dealt with this problem? Does this seem to be a reasonable approach. I DON'T want to have to take the whole door off.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Lionel

The Ugly Duckling-
03 Defender Xtreme, now reduced by 30%.
a master of invisibleness.
You got it Lionel, dont bother wedging the door but, no need
I have just tightened mine and loctited.
Will have a look tonight at what size torx you will need.
I ended up taking the whole hinge off, just remember to catch the spacers and the nuts on the inside of the door. If you look you will see the cut outs in the front edge of the door trim. The front nuts are held captive in the frame.
They have phillips head screws holding the mirror on which make it hard to tighten sufficiently. Am going to look at changing mine to bolts if they come loose again.
Another Land Rover thing....
Remove the two bolts holding the hinge to the door, replace the two phillips-head bolts to the mirror with stainless bolts (I think mine were 12mm heads) - include a spring washer, and finally replace the two nuts in the door with stainless nylon-lock nuts - and a spring washer.
100,000 km in my previous Defender - no problems.
30,000 in this one - no problems.
End of story.![]()
Thanks for all the feedback, people.
Question: Are the hinge nuts in the door captive, or do I have to remove the door trim as well?
Cheers,
Lionel
The two hinge nuts in the door are NOT captive - be careful not to let them drop down into the internals of the door. Replace these two nuts with stainless nylon lock nuts and spring washers.
And if you really wish to do the job properly do the bottom hinges also.
First time - I removed the complete door trim.
Second time - removed the grab handle (two screws) and the surround of the door handle itself (one screw) - levered the trim open at the corner where the top hinge is - held it open with something jammed between the trim and door (along the top of the trim - about half way along). It was quite easy to complete the job - twenty minutes max. There is one plastic fastener in the corner which you will lever open.
I did it this way because I did not wish to go ANYWHERE near the locking button and its plastic surround - for all manner of reasons which are not relevant to this thread - let's just say remote control locking/electrics and the fact that Land Rover don't have adults do the electrics on their vehicles and so on.....
All the best![]()
