    Rattle Rattle clang clunk.

There is something rattling towards the front of my TD5 engine.
At idling speed, the noise is quite distinct.
Engine performance is not restricted in any way - just this annoying rattle.
Model is 1999 and car has just turned over 120k

    Is there a timing chain??

I was told that these engines have timing gears and no chain.

If not a chain, then what could be the cause?

    Thanks in anticipation.

Yes, but that's not usually a problem.
I would suggest removing the serpentine belt & running the engine again. If the noise has gone, then it's one of the parts driven by the belt.

Yep, remove the belt and listen.
Could be a idler pulley bearing or aircon bearing?
Easy and cheap ( DYI) to replace if they are the culprits

    hey ednic,

Not sure if this is your problem, but there was a fault with the 3.9v8 engine camshaft where there was too much chamshaft end float where it would hit the front of the block. not too shure if related to the td5. cheers

Checked it out today and it would appear that the noise is coming from the A/C compressor.

    Thanks everyone for your input..........

In that case you should be able to replace the bearing........without removal of the compressor.

It could be the clutch, and again can be repaired/replaced with the compressor in situ
