I have no personal experience of the six, but from what I have heard it is a nice engine to drive, very good offroad and a bit better than the four on road. BUT - as said above, prone to burning valves and thirsty if driven enthusiastically, and some parts are getting hard to find. Stands abuse rather less readily than the four.
The Holden engines seem to perform well on road, but both carburetter and oil systems are less happy on steep slopes, and the torque curve matches the gearing less well than that of the six. BUT - parts are readily available and cheap.
Fitting a four to an original six installation, as said above, requires a different bell housing, and the engine is set further back on the six, so some modifications will be needed, quite a lot if it is intended to bring the engine forward to the normal position for a four. I would be inclined to either fit the original six or leave the Holden engine in, depending on what you plan to use it for.
