There are 2 general types of AC compressor:

Actually there are 4 common types, swash plate, piston, scroll and screw.

They all have some type of sump, the york type have a larger - more obvious one - but trust me they all have a capacity for holding oil in the 'sump'

If you are sure you won't convert it back you can use any old oil - EP90 or engine oil.

Thanks - I didn't bother going into that much detail. The York is the only type I am aware of which will keep the oil in - all the others will rapidly lose oil during operation if not refilled or recirculated.

IMHO the swash plate ones are the ones to go for if your going to put a lot of duty on them,

but in theory they all should provide the same max psi.

They all have a limited sump in them but a reciever set up to drain back to the intake side is a good plan.

Bloke at works got one on his cruiser I was asking about it Stinking thing runs a 3/4 inch rattle gun at full tilt when its only plumbed to the smaller surge tank and hes only got to get the donk to 2k rpm to do it but then hes at max output.

When big reds aircon dies I know whats going in its place...

You might get something out of the write up I did for my onboard air system here:

    http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php'showtopic=2115

I did a similar write up on this board, but the photos have all disappeared since the site changed around.

when i bought it the air con had no belt on it. The system has gas in it... the bloke I bought it off used it on the farm, said he got it that way and never needed air so left it.

I have a mate who is a fridgie so making it work is easy... but im guessing by the looks of the fan and ducting system and serious air gaps around everything in the cab I think it will fairly suck at keeping cool air in and dust out... Ive no dramas with windows down and breathing dust which brings me to...

Should I fix it and have a marginal air con...
or convert it to a belt driven air compressor? Can the denso compressor be converted by adding an inlet oiler and outlet dryer??? With a big enough tank under the tray could even take the rattle gun in the tool box

    thoughts and opinions

    Thanks
    Steve

Gidday mate, thinking of exactly the same thing for my 130, just came back from around OZ and only used the aircon twice and that was just so we could talk on the phone,
anyway one of my mates was saying you could run the inlet side, or draw the air from the motor as it is already filtered and has an oil mist so you would only need a filer on the outlet.
    Cheers

Ive started to tinker a bit. It seems the fittings will let me bolt the dryer to the outlet of the compressor will tap a fitting to the base to catch the oil. I had thought of taking the inlet from the rocker cover but wasnt sure that it would be a little restricted for air volume... ill run an air filter on the inlet to start with and just shoot some oil in each use. So with some hose and a tank should have air soon.

Yeah, I was a bit concerned if the air flow would be restricted if you did take it from the rocker cover and I am still dubios! but I liked the oil mist side of it.

I'll get to the wreckers and see if I can pick up a truck air tank with all the gear already on it and follow your lead.

I would appreciate it if you keep us posted on your progress.

    Cheers mate

okay while we're on this topic... is it possible to rig up the air-con to work dual purpose? As air-con and a compressor?

Not without losing a bit of gas every time you change. Which is both illegal and would mean regular regassing.
