    Disco 1 instrument cluster repair

    Hi all,

The trip meter in my 1994 Disco 1 has stopped ticking over. The odometer works fine though.
The trip meter used to work fine. Then sometimes you had to push the reset button a few times to get the numbers ticking over. Now it pretty much never works.

I took the instrument cluster thingo out on the weekend but couldn't figure out how to get it apart. Anyone know how to get it apart? I noticed someone fitted their low coolant alarm warning light in it so they must have figured it out.
I did manage to replace 2 illumination bulbs that were blown that I didn't know about. I used some of the warning bulbs that don't do anything on my V8.

Another thing is what operates the trailer indicator on the dash?
Mine has never worked and I assumed the previous owner removed the bulb as it has an ARB winchbar with indicators. However the bulb is fine and no power was going to it when indicating. Is there a relay or something somewhere that may have been removed or a dry joint in a magic box somewhere?

The little trailer light symbol should only come on when there is a trailer connected ( it will flash along with the main indicator. ) -but you probably know that. It triggers on the extra current drawn by the trailer bulbs..... so a simple thing to check is that your trailer indicators are working, or they are not low current LED ones.

This light has never worked since I have owned the car. The extra indicators in the bullbar don't trigger it and neither has either trailer.

I'm thinking that there is a component that senses the extra current which switches the trailer dash light. I'm thinking this is either dead or removed when the bullbar was installed. Maybe this is incorporated into the flasher can?
I'll have to find the flasher can and have a look.

From my understanding its the flasher can that senses the extra load that triggers the trailer light on your dash

the landrover runs a 4 pin flasher can compared to most cars that have 2 and 3 pin flasher cans

It's possible ( just a theory) that someone has put lower wattage bulbs in ALL your flashers when they installed the bullbar, to stop the trailer light coming on. You might want to check that your flashers are running the standard wattage bulbs ( 21Watt I think )

I'll check the flasher can tomorrow. Bit dark now.

I'd be surpised if all the bulbs were less than 21w as they are bright. Worth checking though.

thats interesting mine is on all the time, and doesn't do anything when the trailer is plugged in.

may have to check it, but its been like that for years, but i may go the way of, if it isn't broken don't fix it.

I replaced my flasher can when I bought my Disco because the indicators were flashing too fast (like a bulb had blown). The flasher that I removed had 5 pins on it. The one I put in (out of a wrecked car) has 4 pins. Since I changed the flasher can, the indicators now flash at a 'normal' rate, but the trailer light on the dash now doesn't work. So it seems that the flasher can is definitely responsible for enabling the trailer light on the dash.

Alrighty. I just got around to finding the flasher can in my Disco. The flasher can that is fitted to mine is a Lucas with 3 connections. However the spot it plugs into in the fuse box has 4 connections. If you short the unused connection in the fuse box to power the green trailer illuminates on the dash. Hooray

Anyone got any tips for the other half of the problem?
How do you get the instrument cluster apart to repair the trip meter?

Mine flashes as it has a bull bar fitted. My previous Defender flashed only after I had a winchbar fitted, unless I connected a trailer.
