Thread: Noise when Braking

What are you driving?

I had this sort of thing early on with my first Series, then it started pulling to the side under braking and finally it was obvious the whole axle casing was mobile on the springs. The retaining bolt had broken.

Of course, this possibility doesn't apply if you have coil springs!

check and tighten any nuts and bolts you can see under the vehicle......
you will be surprised.......


is this a single clunk when you apply the brakes......
or a constant clunking whenever the brakes are applied till the vehicle comes to a stop.....?

does varying the braking pressure make any difference.....?

Zook, it's a single clunk, I tried varying it but it only seems to clunk when the brakes are first applied?
On the weekend we fixed the rear pinion seal, then found the Teflon coating that is coated on the Driveshaft spline had got that hot it had welded the spline together, we had to heatthe splines up to loosen, what a job, we have now fixed the driveshaft and greased it up, could the fact that we have fixed the rear problem, now ceated another problem further?

where abouts are you.....?

Is it a 'Clunk' or more of a 'Clack'???

If so, it could just be the pads moving in the caliper.

I have a 92 D1 and have a single click under brakes. I have been told by my new mechanic that my old mechanic has put the wrong front pads in and they hit the caliper under brake, hence the click. On mine it is pretty clear there is a lot of movement of the pads in the caliper. My pads have actually cracked from the stress of hitting the caliper. When i first noticed this my mechanic initially thought the Radius Arms needed tightening up so this may be another thing to check.

if you have still got those pads fitted.....i would suggest you replace them with the correct ones......
